Position Offered: Executive Assistant

The following is a copy of an advertisement for an employment opportunity. I think most will find this ad is insulting and depressing to those who are looking for a job in this economy. Whether excellent at their jobs or not, sadly, this ad typifies the attitude of employers in today's job market. They know that they are in the cat-bird seat. If you are not perfect, you "need not apply."

This ad was recently posted on a popular online job site. I absolutely cannot stand searching for a job online as my only alternative. I feel like I really never know how many potential job openings are being missed. I want to have the ability to physically go from A to Z in the newspaper and read each possibility. I am a legal secretary, but there are many alternative categories under "secretary" or "assistant" that I could find in print... Not now!

To top it off, if you sign up to be "notified" of a job match, it is usually soooo far from a match. Plus, I really enjoy all the junk mail, spam and constant listing of employment agencies -- it is just ridiculous. One email asked for my bank account number!!

IT is simply no wonder why unemployment compensation is being extended for months and months, especially here in California!

Bonnie, I hope you have a comment about it!

I hope Singlewish doesn't mind me saying this, but I found this ad and sent it to her. It was so over the top I actually used an anonymous email address and wrote and told them I was having a hard time deciding if the CEO was a deity or cult leader. Needless to say, I received no reply. These are some of my favorite bits:

"You must really want to serve." [See my comment above; my only other thought is, are you enlisting in something?]

On the days he is in his office, you are in the office all day long staying completely available at all times and being immediately responsive. [What happens if you have to go to the ladies room?]

"You must be willing to work somewhat longer hours than normal; a routine work schedule is 8:00 a.m., sharp - until 6:00 p.m. Higher compensation is given for this." [I should hope so, it's a 9 hour day if you take a 1 hour lunch, see below]

In turn you receive and are encouraged to take a one hour lunch daily. [Isn't this kind and generous of them?]

"Possible health tests/screening may be required as part of your application." [Okay, I've come to grips with drug testing, but this?]

"If you would like, you may submit a paper or email photograph with your application. This photograph, is completely optional…." [I should hope so, it violates labor laws]

Singlewish is right, most of the ads have ridiculous laundry lists of things they want potential applicants to have. And, then state "IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EVERY SINGLE QUALIFICATION DO NOT APPLY." No, I am not kidding.
